Family Connections: an exploration of childhood through ceramic tiled photographs
I take what I discover from exploring my family’s archive with my own recollections and express the stories through imagery. Each image is composed of separate pieces, just as my own memories are made up of moments linked together. My childhood offers me a sense of comfort when confronting what it means to grow up and in turn grow away from my family.
Looking at photographs recalls memories I thought were lost to time. They bring along with them a clearer understanding of my own experiences, reminding me what I wore, where we went, or how I was feeling.
I do not view the past as being intended to be dwelled too deeply upon, rather as a space in my mind to find comfort. Each tile placed together represents a small moment and together they create a distorted image that tells a story and offers a glimpse into my mind. My process of making these personal images in isolation has been a way of dealing with the loss of connection during this time and is a way to reflect on the past, the present, and the future.
